This is an exciting find! A rare little Spode British Blue Platter with an early Spode mark dating from c. 1784. A.W. Coysh, in "Blue and White Transfer Ware: 1780-1840", identifies the pattern as "The Castle Pattern" and dates it c.1810-1815, with a view of the 'Gate of Sebastian' set among trees with a number of figures including a herdsman with 3 cows.

I believe this small platter, 16.5 by 12cm. or approximately, 6-1/2 by 4-3/4", to be from a child's dinnerware set which could actually have been used to serve small meals in the nursery. AND, it has survived in near-mint condition. It could also have served as an underplate for a small tureen.

Oblong foot base with recessed bottom with blue glaze pooling in the crevices. The bottom well is marked with a lower case spode in blue underglaze, as well as a large 'B'. Godden mark 3648, for c.1784+. Staining and wear to the foot ring with stain-rings radiating from stilt marks. 4 rim edge rust marks from, most likely, displaying the platter using one of those unfortunate metal contraptions. Light well scratches but NO damage, NO repair.

Item ID: MP-3
